James Young or RJ Hunter or Ben Bentil?

So it's down to this. Our 2 year emotional investment in Nick Young may finally come to an end. With only one roster spot remaining, we are all waiting to see what happens with that final spot.

We have 3 candidates for the 15th roster spot. James Young, our 2 year veteran who still can't even dominate 1 summer league game, RJ Hunter, our athletically limited 2 guard with a promising shooting stroke, and Ben Bentil, our late 2nd round pick this year. Lets do a pros and cons for each.

James Young - 3rd year Wing

Pros -

  • Decent shooting stroke

  • Above Average athleticism

  • Still only 21 years old

  • Good size for the wing position

    Cons -

  • After 2 years he still hasn't cracked the rotation

  • Inherent basketball IQ seems to be astoundingly low (Defensive positioning, passing)

  • Has no 1 skill that gets him on the floor to be a role player

  • Will be buried even further with Jaylen Brown and Gerald Green ahead of him off the bench

  • Despite being on the team for 3 years I still refer to him as "Nick Young" half the time

RJ Hunter - 2nd year Shooting Guard

Pros -

  • Decent shooting form

  • Potential "Clutch gene" (Has hit big shots in college)

  • Actually has a decent handle and passing ability, not a true PG but has PG skills

    Cons -

  • Limited athleticism

  • Despite having good form, the shooting %'s are low even in college, may just need more of a featured role with low volume

  • Lacks the muscle to defend bigger 2's but also lacks the foot speed to guard smaller ball handlers

  • Low ceiling/high floor type player on a team with a lot of those looking for a star (almost no chance he gets on the floor without 2 injuries)

Ben Bentil - Rookie Power Forward

Pros -

  • Number 1 Option on his college team

  • Showed signs of a decent 3 point shot in college

  • Decent athleticism/speed for a big man, fits the prototype of a modern big man

    Cons -

  • Fits the stereotypical college big man where he can bully people with his size at the NCAA level but gets dominated in the NBA (see Anthony Bennet, Thomas Robinson, Julius Randle, Derrick Williams) It really seems like there is some PF prospect every year who is a little bit undersized and the notion is "If they can develop a 3 point game and convert to being a hybrid forward they'll be great" but then they never make the conversion.

  • Too slow to play SF and too small to play C, he's really locked into that PF role

  • Not the best defender in college

  • Again there is no one skill to get him on the floor as a role player

Verdict - We keep RJ Hunter

At the end of all of that, all i can say is that this team is looking to compete this season. Having RJ at the end of the bench as a shooter is better than having a guy who still has a lot to figure out. Young's ceiling has gone down every year and coming into year 4 I just don't see how he'll even have a chance to step on the floor. RJ has an NBA level skill that a team can use. Even if he still has some developing to do at least we know WHAT he is developing. This is really just a debate about RJ or Young, as Bentil is most likely just on for training camp and will get cut.

What I hope happens - I hope we do some kind of 2/3+picks trade. Really none of these players are going to ever get minutes in Boston. We have so young many players on this roster that or more talented than these 3 (Smart, Rozier, Brown, Mickey) and several players stashed (Yabusele, Zizic) as well as a buttload of picks still. If we can package these guys for a veteran I think it needs to happen.
