I am no doubt certain that there is only a less than 1% chance that Kevin Durant would ever sign with us, but I think there is a lot we can still learn about the future of our franchise from his free agency—in whether he bothers to take a meeting with us. My question is if we, say, make it past the first round of the playoffs, should we expect KD to take a meeting with Danny Ainge? We have cap space, we have rising talent, we have a remarkable supporting cast and assets to grow the team, why shouldn't he at least consider the possibility?
Of course I hope he does throw us this gesture of respect, because I fear what it means if he doesn't. Would that be a signal that Boston really isn't a free agent destination? I know there is a history of stars not taking meetings with good teams, like Lebron and Dallas, but this seems like a good situation for Durant—coach, franchise, team—and it would signal something about our perception around the league if he didn't, right?
